Do You Know a Quiet Person?

Do you know a quiet person? Yes, the blind

man says, his face brightening. Do you know

a person who heals heart wounds? Yes,

a prisoner says, One who gives me food.

Who will sit in quiet & wait, & never oppose?

Do you know a person who suffers wounds,

boarding-school wounds, church-school wounds?

Yes, they say, with none of their native practices.

Yes, they say, devastated in a different kind of hell.

Who will help to rid pain from your heart?

If evil spirits trouble, who will bless your home?

Who will pray with you, family celebration of soup,

stews, chicken, venison, & songs of thanksgiving?

Even then, an argument brews like a man accusing

an old woman of never sharing the oral stories.

And the woman thinks this man never wanted

to hear them. Some sobs are going on.

The man brings the woman a cup of tea,

& they hug like acceptance.

That is what is happening here.
