All Creatures Great and Small

See in celestial-suited light
Each and every finite sight
From land to sky and earth to sea
Creatures ushering a decree
A divine and supernatural hum
Whispers of eternal wisdom.

You are present in those wings, those songs
The finches warbling in gold throngs
Equally the sparrow, also the jay
Up! Up! over earth and air they ballet
And through the clouds their tunes betoken
Your spirit’s voice, soft spoken.

Espy too the butterfly, her sprightly prance
Leaps and glides in chromatic dance
A parade beneath spotlight eye
Ornaments the tapestry of sky
With a heralding and jubilant array
Of your glory on display.

From bush to flower the bumble bee floats
Collecting sweet syrup-notes
Lo! a buzzing banquet held within
Spreads honeyed hymns to posing limbs
Who, blushing—bow to the piped refrain
Denoting orchestrated reign.

Worthy also, of celebratory note
Is the laurel’s pillared throat
Upon which the rubicund robin weaves
His bed from its offering of berries and leaves
How lofty his shelter in the air
Yet still to you, does not compare.

Behold the lambs in alabaster apparel
About the moors, bound and carol
To undulating grass they bend then bleat
Till whence in reaping—are replete
And from those fields their chorus regales
Through the sky, transcendent tales.

Still, as a spotted blessing
The doe thirsting by the spring
In a breath of wind—vanishes
Like dandelion-dispelled wishes
Both of them sigh of something gone
Something holy, once looked upon.

Too, with this boat (vessel of body)
You guide as do oars, sovereignly
Past trumpet lily as she swims
Along the current’s rolling hymns
Hark! the murmur of sparkling foam
Reminds the fount of temporary home.

The voice of you is in all her stir
Nature, our wise preacher
Whispers of far off things—
An echo from a heavenly king.

And when she hums
Of you, to all
May my voice join in her call.
