If God is light, is He not also our source of lightness?
Even in this weighty world, He is not one to neglect our need for levity. As Coburn Dolloff questions in his poem, "An Inquiry Concerning the Laughter of the Heavens":
“What if the laughter is the comfort? Aren’t those who mourn also often those who truly laugh?”
He is keenly aware of our need for His paradoxical nature to not only be wrestled with, but be delighted in. Indeed, even in his mystery, we find pleasure when He makes Himself plain, even if it is just for a moment.
In this issue, you will find explorations of God’s often unseen character. From his sense of wonder displayed in a “dance in joyful wiggle” (Alair), to the playful invitation to communion he offers us with the sugary swirl of cotton candy, God hears our heart’s cry to be children again with Him.
As you read, may you join us in laughing, playing, and making merry alongside our contributors. May you be privy to the very lightness of God.
